Where we get into a drain line depends on which kind of home the call comes from. A house may have a cleanout outside, though some have none, and some have one that can no longer be opened. In a larger building, the cleanout for a shared line may sit in a common area or inside one of the units, and reaching it can take the manager's help.

Working from the right opening

We work through openings the plumbing already has. For one slow fixture, that is usually the fixture itself or its trap, with a cable sized to that branch drain. For a main line or a shared building line, it is a cleanout, if there is one we can open. When there isn't, we explain what reaching the line would take and get approval before anything is removed or opened up. Which tool we use comes down to the fixture, the pipe's condition and how easily the blockage can be reached. In an apartment building, we confirm with the manager which units we may enter before the visit.

Is it safe to pour a chemical drain cleaner into a clogged sink?

We advise against it. A chemical opener often pools in the trap and leaves the clog where it is, and older pipe and fixtures can be harmed by it. If one has already gone down, let us know before we start work, since it may still be in the drain when the trap is opened.

Why does water come up in my shower when I flush the toilet?

The flushed water is meeting a blockage further down and backing up to the lowest opening it can reach, which is often the shower or tub drain. That points to the main line, or in a building, to a line that may serve several units. Stop flushing and running water until it is cleared, and tell us where the cleanout is if you know.

Does every house in Van Nuys have a sewer cleanout?

Not every one. Some houses have none, and on others the cleanout can't be opened or reached anymore. That matters most for the main line, since one slow fixture can usually be worked from the fixture or its trap. If you know where yours is, tell us when you call. If there isn't a usable one, we explain how the line can be reached before anything is approved.

What the City of Los Angeles says about drains

LA Sanitation tells residents never to pour cooking grease down a sink or garbage disposal, because it solidifies inside pipes. Instead, it says, scrape food leftovers into the trash and pour cooled grease into a sealed container in the black trash bin.

LA Sanitation also explains what poured grease does: fats, oils and grease that go down household drains cool, solidify and stick to the inside walls of sewer pipes, and over time the buildup restricts wastewater flow until it causes sewer overflows in homes.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) says a rotten-egg or sewage smell at the sink is usually sewer gas formed by bacteria in the household drain, not an odor in the water. Those bacteria, it says, live on food, soap, hair and other organic matter in the drain.

For rental properties, the Los Angeles Housing Department tells owners to make sure the property does not have defective drainage, plumbing leaks, or damaged or inoperable plumbing fixtures.

What California law says about wipes

Under California law, with some exceptions, baby wipes, and wipes made wholly or partly of petrochemical-derived fibers that are likely to be used in a bathroom and have significant potential to be flushed, must carry a "Do Not Flush" label and symbol if they were made on or after July 1, 2022.

The same law bars the companies that make or label those wipes from claiming in any way that they are flushable. It covers those two kinds of wipes only, so other wipes can still be sold as flushable.

On the drain side, a label does not change what happens in the pipe. In a toilet and the branch line behind it, wipes do not clear the way toilet paper does.
