Sewer Repair & Replacement in Burbank

When roots have broken into a Burbank sewer line, Mr. Pipe Plumbing works out whether a section repair will do or the line needs replacing. On one property, our crew replaced a root-damaged stretch by pipe bursting, a method that follows the old pipe's route from access points. Where that route or the access does not allow it, lining or excavation may be the alternative.

Roots, and a line replaced along its own path

Heavy root intrusion led to a 40‑foot replacement at one Burbank property, where our crew used pipe bursting to put new pipe along the old line's route.

Census Bureau data for the City of Burbank (2024 five-year survey) show about 51% of homes standing before 1960 and about 72% before 1980. Those dates belong to the buildings. Roots can work into a joint or a crack whenever a line was laid, and a building's construction date says nothing about whether its sewer line has been replaced since.

Half of all Burbank homes are single-family houses, the same 2024 Census figures show, and two‑to‑four‑unit buildings hold about 10%. For a duplex or a fourplex, we go through the findings with the owner, since a repair there can affect more than one household.

Root damage and the choice of method

Roots enter through joints and small openings, and as they grow they force those openings wider. Cutting them out of the pipe restores flow for a while but leaves the joint as it was. Where the damage is at one joint and the pipe around it is usable, a section repair can address it. Where roots have opened joints along much of the run, replacing the line is the conversation we have with the owner.

Bursting, the method on that job, needs workable access at each end and a route clear of anything that rules it out. When those conditions are not there, the options are lining, where the pipe can still carry a liner, or excavating to the damaged pipe.

Trenchless work is not our default and it is not available on every line. Where it is an option, we say so. Where the condition of the pipe or the access rules it out, we explain why and what the alternative involves.

A few useful answers

What are the warning signs of a broken sewer line?

Repeated main-line backups that cleaning doesn't hold off for long, backups that hit the lowest fixtures first, gurgling, sewage odor around the yard or a cleanout, and a patch of lawn that stays soggy or sinks. Each points toward the line, though none proves a break on its own. The line has to be assessed before anyone recommends a repair.

Why does my sewer back up again soon after it's cleared?

Because clearing a line doesn't repair it. If the backup returns at the same point, something in the pipe is catching waste: roots coming back through an opened joint, a low spot where water sits, or a rough, narrowed section. At that stage the pipe itself needs assessing, and the answer may be a section repair or a new line.

Can earthquakes break sewer lines in Burbank?

They can. An earthquake moves the ground, and moving ground is one of the things that cracks pipe and separates joints. A line damaged that way may keep working for a time, so watch for slow drains, gurgling, sewage smells outside, or a patch over the line that sinks after a quake. If those appear, have the line assessed.

Know what happens next

  1. Discuss and assess

Our goal is to identify the cause of the problem and recommend an appropriate repair based on the plumbing condition, accessibility, and scope of work.

  2. Findings and estimate

We assess the issue, explain our findings, and provide an estimate before any approved work begins.

  3. Work completed and confirmed

After approved work is completed, we test the repaired or installed plumbing where applicable, explain the completed work, and provide the customer or authorized contact with the appropriate service documentation.

Pricing depends on the plumbing condition, accessibility, materials, and actual scope of work. If additional work is discovered, it will be explained and approved before proceeding.
