Sewer Camera Inspection in Valley Village

Owners and managers of Valley Village apartment buildings, and homeowners too, can have Mr. Pipe Plumbing inspect a drain or sewer line with a camera. Most of the neighborhood's homes are decades old, and most are rented, so the decision to inspect usually sits with an owner or manager, even when a tenant is the one who noticed the backup. We explain the findings to that contact.

In Valley Village

A 1970s peak and a renter majority

More of the Valley Village ZIP-code area's homes date from the 1970s than from any other decade, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's five-year estimates for 2024. In those 2024 Census figures, about 72% predate 1980 and about 36% predate 1960.

The same 2024 Census estimates show about 70% of occupied Valley Village homes rented and about 63% of all homes in complexes of five units or more. For a camera inspection, that means the person living with a slow drain is often not the person who can approve a look at the line.

In an apartment building, the camera can evaluate only what the access points let it reach, and getting to them may mean working around tenants. We arrange that with the owner or manager and report back to whoever set up the visit.

Sources U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2024 5‑year, tables B25034 (year structure built), B25003 (tenure), B25024 (units in structure).

Inspecting the line under a rental building

We start with what tenants have reported: which units back up, which drains are slow, and whether the trouble came back after an earlier cleaning. Dates help, even rough ones. That pattern tells us where to begin. Next we locate the access points and size up the line itself; between them, they set the limits of what the camera can evaluate, and some lines have to be cleaned first. When we finish, the owner or manager gets a plain account of what we saw and our suggestion, be it cleaning, hydro jetting or a repair discussion. Where an access point sits inside an occupied unit, the owner or manager sets up our entry.

When a sewer camera inspection is appropriate, we use specialized equipment to help evaluate accessible sections of a drain or sewer line and explain the findings.

Camera access and visibility depend on the condition of the line, available access points, and whether cleaning is required before inspection.

Will I get a video I can send to the building owner?

Not as a matter of course. How clearly the camera shows the line depends on the line itself, where we can get in, and whether buildup has to be cleared out of the way, so we don't include a recording as standard. The owner or manager does get our explanation of the findings and our view on the next step.

What can a camera actually see inside a sewer line?

Roots and grease that narrow the pipe, breaks, joints that have pulled apart, low spots that hold water, sections that have shifted out of line, and objects that should not be in there. It sees only the sections it can reach from the available access points, and some lines must be cleaned before it can see much at all.

When should a landlord have the sewer line scoped?

When the same backup keeps coming back, when tenants in different units report slow drains at the same time, or when a clog is back soon after a cleaning. Taking over a building whose line nobody can describe is another reason, and so is an earlier cleaning or repair that never turned up the cause.

What LA Sanitation says is behind more than half of backups

LA Sanitation says more than half of sewer backups are caused by tree roots and by fats, oils and grease poured down drains. It also explains how the grease does its damage: poured down household drains, it cools, solidifies and sticks to the inside walls of sewer pipes, and over time the buildup restricts wastewater flow until it causes sewer overflows in homes.

Roots and grease buildup are two of the things a camera inspection helps us evaluate. When a backup keeps coming back, the inspection can show whether roots, grease or both are in the reachable part of the line, and the findings shape what comes next, such as cleaning or hydro jetting.

Know what happens next

  1. Discuss and assess

Our goal is to identify the cause of the problem and recommend an appropriate repair based on the plumbing condition, accessibility, and scope of work.

  2. Findings and estimate

We assess the issue, explain our findings, and provide an estimate before any approved work begins.

  3. Work completed and confirmed

After approved work is completed, we test the repaired or installed plumbing where applicable, explain the completed work, and provide the customer or authorized contact with the appropriate service documentation.

Pricing depends on the plumbing condition, accessibility, materials, and actual scope of work. If additional work is discovered, it will be explained and approved before proceeding.
